To witness a machine harvest is to view quite a performance. The curtain rises after sundown, the exact time depending upon temperature. The opening act is a parade of lighted machine harvesters, tractors pulling gondolas – at least two per machine harvester – and supervisory personnel trucks – all moving at machine harvester speed on Airport Road and down our driveways. The second act begins shortly after the players arrive. The harvester(s) and tractor/gondolas begin the gradual trip down each vineyard row – we have 80 in each varietal – until finished, usually at sunrise. This year, with only one harvester for most of the night of the Merlot harvest, we finished mid-morning, hence the daytime pictures. By the time each harvest is finished, we are tired from having been awake all night but also very happy that the process is complete and was successful.
